Tri-Valley All Stars

Congratulations to Meagan Elliott, who was selected yesterday as a Tri-Valley League All Star. Meagan finished the season with 17 goals and 5 assists. Jillian Wry, Paige Almeida and Stephanie Powers all received honorable mentions from the Tri-Valley League. Way to go, girls!

The Hopkinton game tomorrow has been rescheduled for this Monday, at home, at 3:30 for both JV and varsity.

Norton 3; Medfield 2

A hat-trick from Meagan Elliott put us on top in the first half and, as we predicted, Medfield pounded our defense during the second half. Our defense deserves tremendous credit for last night. Despite our team's injuries and sickness, we fought hard and came out on top. Rest up and prepare for Dover-Sherborn on Wednesday night.

Holliston and Medway

These teams are consistently strong, ending each season high on the standings ladder. When we operate as a team and deliver a full-game performance at our highest level of communication, teamwork and hustle, we have as good of a chance as anyone to compete against them. The bad news is that we let these two games slip; the good news is we get to see both teams again for a second chance.

Bellingham

Our most complete game thus far. This is a team that cannot be underestimated. They will capitalize on opportunities if we provide them.

Monday, September 15, 2008

Westwood

The varsity team tied Westwood 0-0 on Friday. Casey played another solid game in net, and everyone responded well to some positional changes which seemed to help us regroup during the second half.

The weather does not look promising for today, so our visit to the Wheaton campus is canceled. Please spread the word. Let's aim for the game on Saturday, September 27th at 1:00 instead. Enjoy your Sunday. The bus will leave the high school for Bellingham at 3:45 tomorrow.

Tonight's games against Holliston have been postponed. Make sure to listen carefully to the announcements at the beginning and end of each school day; this is the means by which such information is communicated. I will update this post when the games are rescheduled.

Junior Varsity

For those of us who have followed the JV girls' soccer team for some time, we have witnessed several years of struggle in the Tri-Valley League. Competing against towns which see tryout numbers in the 60-80 range, JV wins were few and far between. This season, the tides have changed.

Although our JV numbers are critically low, the quality of our players has thus far led the team to 2 wins to open the season, a feat unprecedented in recent years. Led by Coach Desorcy and captain Colleen McDermott, the Lancer JVs sealed victories over Ashland and Millis. Freshman Kristen MacGray has already scored 4 goals and appears to be establishing herself as a serious scoring threat on any field.

Equally impressive is the fact that the team is squeezing by with only 12 players, 3 of whom are goalies.

The JV team is the greatest reflection of our future success at the varsity level, supported by the fact that at this time, 10 players on the varsity roster have come up through the JV system.

Great work, girls- keep it up.

Wheaton Womens' Soccer Game

Our team will attend the Wheaton Womens' Soccer game against The University of Maine at Farmington. The game is scheduled for 1:00pm on Sunday, September 14th. This is a mandatory practice; if for some reason you cannot attend, post your name and explanation below.

Norton 1; Millis 1

Freshman Paige Almeida (unassisted) netted the lone goal for the Lancers on Friday. We had some periods of strong play during the game, but we have to find a way to tie it all together for eighty minutes. Rest up and prepare for Holliston on Tuesday.

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Norton 2; Ashland 0

Although the first half (and some of the second half) lacked the intensity and speed we need to see for the remainder of the season, we managed to seal a win for the opening game. Meagan Elliott had an outstanding game with 2 goals and a number of strong shots on net. The defense, particularly goalkeeper Casey Remick, kept the team in the game long enough to seal the victory. Enjoy the win- it has been a long time since the Norton girls have started the season with a victory.

Parent Volunteers

I will be keeping game records this year in order to better document both our team and our opponents and track team and individual statistics. As I tend to have my hands full during games, I am looking for parent spectators who are willing to assist me in this effort by filling out game records (goals, assists, penalties, cards, opponent notes, etc.). After games, I can check these records against my own in order to ensure accuracy. If this interests you, please post your name as a comment here (below this paragraph). I will provide your daughter with several copies of game record sheets for you to complete at your convenience.

Seniors: College Soccer

One of my goals for this year is to facilitate correspondence between players who wish to play college soccer and the schools that they are interested in. If you are a senior and aspire to attend and play soccer in college, please supply me with a list of the schools you are interested in, photocopies of your general application materials, and athletic administrator and/or coach contact information whenever possible. Senior year is both exciting and stressful, so try to stay organized and plan ahead.

Norton 5; Abington 0

Nice scrimmage, girls. Our new formation appears to be working well. The defense looked solid; our passing game has improved considerably and four different Lancers netted goals today (2 from freshman Meagan Elliott, who had an outstanding debut). You should all feel good about your level of play, but remember: our league play will be far more challenging. Rest up and prepare for practice on Monday, during which we will fine-tune our lineup and tactics in preparation for the home opener against Ashland.

The junior varsity squad won their game 6-1. This is especially impressive considering the team had no substitutes and 3 goalies. Great work, girls.

Day One

I was impressed by everyone's effort and enthusiasm today during the first set of double sessions. Keep it up.

Schedule Changes

The schedule has been modified again. Please check below. Due to the fact that our first game falls on the Tuesday before school begins, it is imperative that we meet at some point during the long weekend. To keep with the 10 session rule, the Saturday (23rd) practice has been eliminated. As we sign up for TPC volunteer times, please do your best to avoid the last shift on Labor Day.

Attendance

The preseason schedule is posted below. Obviously, it is important for all players to attend practice. I understand that some scheduling conflicts are inevitable. If a player is unable to attend any session due to an employment or familial obligation, I expect them to inform me of the anticipated absence before it occurs. This may be done by a phone call, by text message or by commenting on this post. Thanks.

TPC Fundraiser

Please read the following message from Kym Arena outlining the upcoming TPC fundraiser:

"It is time to get busy organizing for our biggest fund-raiser, working with Prom Catering at the Deutsche Bank Golf Tournament 8/27 - 8/31. Last year was our first year participating in this event and we were able to bring in more than $8K for the Club! It is obviously a most worthwhile effort to ensure that we take advantage of the earning potential afforded us. Over the past few weeks I've been communicating with the event coordinator from Prom Catering. Based upon general info that I provided her, (approx. number of volunteers & age range of the volunteers), she recommended that we plan to staff an entire tent a day. She has recommended a couple of tents that would be a good fit for our group and offer us maximum earning potential. Both tents she suggested are full menu tents so we will be serving food and beverage. We would need a total of 30 volunteers to staff a tent for a day. The day is broken into 3 shifts, 8-2:00, 9-3 :00, and 11:00 to close. We do have the opportunity to "own" a tent for the entire 5 day tournament. However, since that would require us to staff 150 shifts and that week is the week of double sessions, the jamboree and the holiday weekend, I don't think it is feasible to do so. I propose that we at least commit to Friday, Sat., and Sunday. I would like your input about shooting for Thursday as well. Thursday, we would probably have to find 30 non-player volunteers since that is usually the day of the jamboree and many players will be involved with that. I don't know if that is realistic. Additionally, our compensation is a % of the $ brought in divided amongst the volunteers during the shift, so it may not even be worth the effort to try and work any of the less busy days.

Please email me your thoughts and we'll make our final call.

While we're at it, if you could please indicate any shifts that you & your loved ones would be available for. Each day we will need 5 people for the 8-2:00 shift, 15for the 9-3, and 10 for the 11 to close shifts. We might as well get started organizing now."
