Mr. Greene and I are working on coordinating and finalizing our preseason schedules based on limited field ability and scheduling conflicts. This has been a particular challenge this summer and I appreciate your patience. Please view the existing schedule (below). The days will likely remain the same; the times may change. We were recently informed that we may be sharing fields for preseason, which (obviously) complicates our scheduling.

Football/Soccer/Track: Field Pick-Up

Each year our fall teams participate in a field clean-up in order to spruce up our facilities for the upcoming season. Please set aside the following date. I can offer volunteer hours (required for graduation) for players who participate.

Physicals & MIAA Participation Forms

As the preseason approaches, please be sure to take care of all the necessary paperwork that was distributed during the fall sports meeting. Each year, we receive notice from the athletic director that players have either not yet submitted a physical exam or submitted a physical exam which is not current enough to be accepted for the fall season. Missing or expired physicals will prevent players from participation (including tryouts). This can be very disappointing and stressful for both players and coaches. Please update your status through the athletic director before the preseason begins. You may also choose to place the forms in my school mailbox (as many of you have already done). I will then forward the information to the nurse and athletic director.

Summer Splash

As I mentioned at the fall sports meeting, I am working with some young players as part of Norton's Summer Splash Program. Our sessions take place from 12:30-3:30 behind the Yelle School (this week and next). Players- please feel free to drop by whenever you can to help out. You can earn service hours playing soccer- a good deal. Plus, our SS program numbers are so low that we need all the help we can get. Thanks to Amanda S., Bri V., Julie A., Kim S., and Paige A. for helping out these past two days. It is greatly appreciated.

I am impressed by the number of girls soccer players involved in the Friends of Rachel Program which works to sustain the positive changes brought to NHS via Rachel's Challenge. It 's great to see so many familiar faces committed to such a worthwhile program.

We have a wide range of leadership opportunities at NHS and the girls soccer team is well-represented in many of them. Let's keep up this trend.

GIRLS SOCCER: Upsets for Norton, D-R

Relying upon the strength of their intensive Tri-Valley League schedule, the Norton High girls' soccer team once again proved to be a giant-killer in the MIAA Division 2-South Sectional Tournament Monday.

On the road for the second time in three days, the 17th-seeded Lancers stunned top-seeded and previously-unbeaten Bourne, 2-0, in a first-round match.

Behind second-half goals within six minutes of each other by Nicolette Schuko and Kristin MacGray, the Lancers surprised the South Coast Conference champion Canalmen and advanced to the quarterfinal round of postseason play, visiting No. 8 seeded and fellow TVL member Holliston Wednesday afternoon at 1.

"We wanted to play like we had nothing to lose," said Norton coach Todd Kefor, whose Lancers followed the trend of good teams from good leagues advancing in the postseason. "They were a bit of a mystery to us, they were an imposing team."

But to the Lancers' credit, they blanked Bourne through the first half of play and stopper back Julie Aussubel earned the "man of the match" honors for her shadowing of the Canalmen's leading scorer. "Our defense didn't give up much space," added Kefor, Lancer goalie Audrey Maia totaling seven saves in preserving the shutout. Norton (7-5-7) now meets a Holliston side, to whom it has lost by 1-0 and 3-1 margins.

The Lancers weren't intimidated by Bourne, especially after matching shoves and pushes, winning their fair share of 50-50 balls through the initial 20 minutes. "We felt each other out, there were chances on both sides," added Kefor. "They were big and physical," but by being engaged in a scoreless stalemate by halftime, Norton went hell-bent in the second half.

Schuko challenged the Bourne goalkeeper for space and possession of the ball on a bouncing ball, nudging the ball into the net for the match-winner in the eighth minute. Six minutes later, MacGray got a head on a Kate Ledbetter corner kick for the second Lancer tally.

Norton created 15 shots on goal, 10 during the second half. Alltold, the Lancers have scored six goals and allowed just one in the postseason. "We kind of felt all along through the season, that if we can make it (the tournament) out of our league schedule, the strength of the league would help us," added Kefor.

BOURNE – Losing in the state tournament is never easy. But it's particularly frustrating when it comes in the opening round following an undefeated season.

That's what happened to the Bourne girls soccer team yesterday. The top-seeded Canalmen suffered a 2-0 defeat to No. 17 Norton in Division 2 South first-round play, ending the season on a sour note.

“It was a tremendous season. I couldn't ask for more,” Bourne coach Yvonna Rowinski said. “We won the (South Coast Conference) championship. We've never done that before. The girls worked hard. They deserve everything they've gotten.

“But I'm upset, because it's nice to win. We hadn't lost all season until today, so it kind of stinks.”

The Canalmen finish 17-l-1 while the Lancers (8-5-7) move on to face No. 8 Holliston in tomorrow's quarterfinals.

After a scoreless first half, Norton broke through 3:12 into the second half when Nicolette Schuko's high, soft floater eluded goalie Katelyn Hourihan and found the back of the net.

“She did the right thing to come out and get it, but then she lost track of the ball,” Rowinski said. “I think that girl just kicked it with a wish and it went in.”

Once they had the lead, the Lancers went into full defensive mode, leaving only two attackers up front and packing eight into the box. Still, the Canalmen had their chances.

“It was kick-and-run. There was no soccer today. It was kind of ugly, ” Rowinski said. “But we definitely battled. That second goal pretty much deflated us.”

The Lancers padded the lead at 28:56, scoring off a corner. Kristen MacGray headed in a feed from Kate Ledbetter to finish a pretty play and seal the Canalmen's fate.

Bourne's Ryann Chase, the leading scorer in the SCC this season, went out with an ankle injury with 14 minutes left. She returned a few minutes later, but her absence was felt.

“I'm proud of these girls,” Rowinski said. “We didn't win. But there's always next year.”

The soccer team that wasn’t supposed to have a chance is in the semifinals and the No. 1 seed isn’t, proving almost anything can happen in sports.
Bourne’s No. 11 seeded boys soccer team (9-3-5) trounced No. 6 West Bridgewater 6-0 Sunday and earned a shot at No. 3 Westport (14-2-2). The teams will play at Westport at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Westport blanked No. 14 Cohasset 3-0.
Dan Moscaritolo had two goals while Luke Weatherby, Jeff Small, Justin Desharnais and Kyle Johnson each had one as the Canalmen built a 4-0 halftime lead and coasted past West Bridgewater.
But the top-seeded and previously unbeaten girls soccer team suffered a 2-0 shocking setback to No. 17 Norton in a first-round game. The Lady Canalmen finished 17-1-1.

Norton 4, Hopkinton 1

HOPKINTON - Meagan Elliott scored twice, once on a second half penalty shot, as the Lancers of Norton High stunned Tri-Valley League member in the Division 3-South preliminary-round match.

"We didn't do a whole lot different," said Norton coach Todd Kefor, whose Lancers had lost twice by one-goal margins to Hopkinton during the regular TVL season.

Hopkinton employs a flat-back defensive system "and we have difficulty scoring," added Kefor. But, No. 17 seeded Norton (7-5-7) stunned the Hillers by scoring twice within the first 15 minutes of the match and by halftime, the Lancers had created a 3-0 advantage.

Kim Schubert put Norton ahead at the three-minute mark, one-timing a volley of a shot off of a Kate Ledbetter corner kick. Nicolette Schuko scored what proved to be the match-winner for Norton in the 13th minute, finishing off a through ball from Stephanie Powers with a 10-yard shot.

"They rose to the occasion, they played with composure," added Kefor. Norton goalie Audrey Maia was a catalyst, by making nine saves, including one on a point-blank shot in the 10th minute to preserve the one-goal lead.

Elliott created a 3-0 lead for the Lancers in the 30th minute, finishing off a through ball from Kristen MacGray. Then after being tripped inside the penalty box in the 69th minute, Elliott converted the penalty kick. The victory sends Norton into a first round match Monday at Bourne.

Our comeback victory over Medfield brought with it our first team goal: to qualify for the playoffs. Great game, everyone! You all stepped up and played your role (and then some). Making the tournament for the first time in years is a huge step forward. More importantly, it represents the fact that we are a winning team. Junior Varsity

For those of us who have followed the JV girls' soccer team for some time, we have witnessed several years of struggle in the Tri-Valley League. Competing against towns which see tryout numbers in the 60-80 range, JV wins were few and far between. This season, the tides have changed.

Although our JV numbers are critically low, the quality of our players has thus far led the team to 2 wins to open the season, a feat unprecedented in recent years. Led by Coach Desorcy and captain Colleen McDermott, the Lancer JVs sealed victories over Ashland and Millis. Freshman Kristen MacGray has already scored 4 goals and appears to be establishing herself as a serious scoring threat on any field.

Equally impressive is the fact that the team is squeezing by with only 12 players, 3 of whom are goalies.

The JV team is the greatest reflection of our future success at the varsity level, supported by the fact that at this time, 10 players on the varsity roster have come up through the JV system.

Great work, girls- keep it up.

Although the first half (and some of the second half) lacked the intensity and speed we need to see for the remainder of the season, we managed to seal a win for the opening game. Meagan Elliott had an outstanding game with 2 goals and a number of strong shots on net. The defense, particularly goalkeeper Casey Remick, kept the team in the game long enough to seal the victory. Enjoy the win- it has been a long time since the Norton girls have started the season with a victory.

Nice scrimmage, girls. Our new formation appears to be working well. The defense looked solid; our passing game has improved considerably and four different Lancers netted goals today (2 from freshman Meagan Elliott, who had an outstanding debut). You should all feel good about your level of play, but remember: our league play will be far more challenging. Rest up and prepare for practice on Monday, during which we will fine-tune our lineup and tactics in preparation for the home opener against Ashland.

The junior varsity squad won their game 6-1. This is especially impressive considering the team had no substitutes and 3 goalies. Great work, girls.

TPC Fundraiser

Please read the following message from Kym Arena outlining the upcoming TPC fundraiser:

"It is time to get busy organizing for our biggest fund-raiser, working with Prom Catering at the Deutsche Bank Golf Tournament 8/27 - 8/31. Last year was our first year participating in this event and we were able to bring in more than $8K for the Club! It is obviously a most worthwhile effort to ensure that we take advantage of the earning potential afforded us. Over the past few weeks I've been communicating with the event coordinator from Prom Catering. Based upon general info that I provided her, (approx. number of volunteers & age range of the volunteers), she recommended that we plan to staff an entire tent a day. She has recommended a couple of tents that would be a good fit for our group and offer us maximum earning potential. Both tents she suggested are full menu tents so we will be serving food and beverage. We would need a total of 30 volunteers to staff a tent for a day. The day is broken into 3 shifts, 8-2:00, 9-3 :00, and 11:00 to close. We do have the opportunity to "own" a tent for the entire 5 day tournament. However, since that would require us to staff 150 shifts and that week is the week of double sessions, the jamboree and the holiday weekend, I don't think it is feasible to do so. I propose that we at least commit to Friday, Sat., and Sunday. I would like your input about shooting for Thursday as well. Thursday, we would probably have to find 30 non-player volunteers since that is usually the day of the jamboree and many players will be involved with that. I don't know if that is realistic. Additionally, our compensation is a % of the $ brought in divided amongst the volunteers during the shift, so it may not even be worth the effort to try and work any of the less busy days.

Please email me your thoughts and we'll make our final call.

While we're at it, if you could please indicate any shifts that you & your loved ones would be available for. Each day we will need 5 people for the 8-2:00 shift, 15for the 9-3, and 10 for the 11 to close shifts. We might as well get started organizing now."

Thanks to Mr. Kent Taylor, fellow English teacher and NHS coach for facilitating a solid conditioning routine for today's captains' practice. Mr. Taylor was impressed by the drive and general attitudes of those who attended.

Captains' Practices for Summer 2008

Captains' Practices will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, weekly, beginning July 7. Mondays and Fridays are practice days for which players must bring cleats, shin pads, at least one ball and plenty of water. On Wednesdays, players will meet at the NHS track for conditioning and must bring running shoes and plenty of water. Check back to this post weekly for any updates or modifications.
